Whether your license transfers to a new PC depends entirely on what type of license it is. Getting this right before you start avoids paying for a license you already own.
Retail license — transferable
A retail copy of Windows (bought separately, in a box or digitally, from Microsoft or an authorized retailer) is licensed to you, not the hardware. You can deactivate it on the old PC and activate it on a new one.
- On the old PC, deactivate first if possible (Settings › Activation), or simply move on if the PC is being retired.
- Install Windows on the new PC using the same key.
- If it doesn’t auto-activate, use the Activation Troubleshooter › “I changed hardware on this device recently” option, signed into the Microsoft account the license is linked to.
OEM license — tied to the original hardware
If Windows came pre-installed on a prebuilt PC or laptop, it’s usually an OEM license bound to that specific motherboard for its lifetime. It generally cannot be legally transferred to different hardware — when that PC is retired, the license retires with it.
Just replacing a drive (same PC, same motherboard)?
This is the easy, fully-supported case: your license is tied to the motherboard, not the drive. Two ways to move your Windows install to a new drive without any activation trouble:
- Clone the drive with Clonezilla (see our cloning guide) — copies everything, including activation state, exactly as-is.
- Fresh install on the new drive, same PC — since the motherboard is unchanged, Windows re-activates automatically once online, no key re-entry needed.
Building a whole new PC?
Since the motherboard is changing, expect to need the Activation Troubleshooter’s hardware-change option (retail license) — or a new license entirely if the old one was OEM.
