Whether you just reinstalled Windows, bought a new key, or are setting up a fresh PC build, activating with a product key is a two-minute job once you know where it goes. Here is the process end to end.
Step 1 — Open Activation settings
- Go to Settings › System › Activation (Windows 11) or Settings › Update & Security › Activation (Windows 10).
- Click Change product key (or Add a product key if none is installed yet).
Step 2 — Enter the key
- Type the 25-character key exactly as given, including the dashes (Windows auto-formats them). Click Next.
- Make sure you’re connected to the internet — activation checks the key against Microsoft’s servers.
- Windows validates the key and applies the matching edition (Home, Pro, or Enterprise) automatically.
Step 3 — Confirm it worked
Return to the Activation page. It should read “Windows is activated with a digital license” (or similar, with the edition name). If it doesn’t, see the troubleshooting below.
Choosing the right edition of install media
A Home key needs Home-edition install media, and a Pro key needs Pro-edition media — entering a Pro key during a Home installation will prompt you to upgrade rather than simply activate. Our Windows Install & Recovery USB includes both Home and Pro setup so this isn’t a hurdle.
If the key is rejected
- Double-check for typos — 0 (zero) vs O, 1 vs I are the most common misreads.
- Confirm the edition matches — a key for one edition won’t activate a different one.
- Check it hasn’t been used already — most retail keys activate a limited number of devices; reusing one past its limit fails.
- If it still won’t validate, see our activation error guide for specific error codes and fixes.

Where do I enter my Windows product key?
Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10. Click 'Change product key' or 'Add a product key' and type it in.
Why does Windows say my product key is invalid?
Usually a typo, an edition mismatch (Pro key on a Home install, for example), or the key already reaching its activation limit on other devices. Double-check all three before assuming the key itself is bad.
Do I need internet access to activate Windows?
Yes — activation validates the key against Microsoft's servers online. Offline activation by phone is possible in some cases but online is the standard, fastest method.
