A clean install wipes the system drive and installs Windows 11 fresh — no accumulated junk, no leftover malware, no years of driver cruft. It sounds drastic, but if your license is a digital license (the vast majority of PCs today), it comes back automatically, and your personal files are only at risk if you skip the backup step.
Before you start: back up
A clean install erases the system drive, including your Desktop, Documents, Pictures and Downloads folders on that drive. Copy anything you need to an external drive or cloud storage first. If the PC won’t boot normally, see our file-recovery guide to get your data off before wiping anything.
Step 1 — Confirm your license will come back
If Windows 11 is currently activated on this exact PC, its digital license is already tied to this hardware (and/or your Microsoft account). A clean install of the same edition reactivates automatically once you’re online — no key needed. See our product key guide if you specifically need the key for another reason.
Step 2 — Boot from your Windows 11 USB
Insert your bootable Windows 11 USB (see our guide to creating one, or use a ready-made one) and boot from it via the boot menu key (F12/F9/Esc) at startup.
Step 3 — Choose Custom install and delete the partitions
- At “Which type of installation do you want?”, choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
- Select each partition on your system drive and click Delete until only unallocated space remains.
- Select the unallocated space and click Next — Windows creates fresh partitions and installs.
Step 4 — Finish setup and confirm activation
Complete the out-of-box setup, connect to the internet, then check Settings › System › Activation. It should show activated automatically. If not, see our activation error guide.
